INTERVIEW SESSION BELOW
Interview:
They say you can rap about anything except for Jesus. That means guns, politics and sex but if you talk about God your record won’t get played.
My name is Wisdom Azuama, with gospel news services. We are here in Port Harcourt with Donald Braide whose album will be released later this year.
We are here to chat about his music and faith.

Wisdom: D-Braide, how did his whole thing begin?
D-Braide: I will say it’s actually a mystery because I was shocked myself. God took me unawares. It all started in my one room apartment at the Guest house in Tombia. One evening after school, words kept battling for space in my brain, I had no choice but to write them down and later I discovered that I was writing a rap.

Wisdom: Do you feel that rap in music is marginalized in Nigeria?
D-Braide: Yes, it is rap music is marginalized in Nigeria. In this our great nation, rap music is not considered as a Christian thing. So you find secular rap artist dominating in this aspect of music and feeding the minds of our teens and youth with rubbish. God has decided to turn things around through me by endowing me with this great gift.

Wisdom: D-Braide, do you have an aim for denomination reconciliation?
D-Braide: I sure denomination reconciliation will take it’s natural course, because the teens and youths of several denominations that dislike rap music, listen and enjoy rap music. But this time they’re not gonna listen to rap music that excite their sinful nature but anointed rap music packed with the gospel. So through lovers of rap music especially the teens and youths, denomination reconciliation will take it’s natural course.

Wisdom: Do you have any dream collaborator and how do you discern when to collaborate with a secular artist, who might be profane?
D-Braide: I already have a senior collaborator in the person of the Holy Spirit. But my dream collaborator is Lecrae. In the issue of collaborating with a profane secular artist, it’s going to be IMPOSSIBLE for me to feature an artist that rap against what I believe and preach. But if I’m being featured by a profane secular artist, I still will not rap contrary to what I believe, because I’m proud to be a Jesus Freak.

Wisdom: D-Braide, you’re new in the industry. What do you think it is about this album that will raise the bar of rap in gospel industry?
D-Braide: Seriously, it’s going to raise the bar of rap. I’m so sure it will because, “…the race is not to the swift nor the battle to the strong….; but time and chance happeneth to them all” Eccle. 9:11. I believe it is time for the gospel to be preached radically, especially through rap music. The Album contains songs that will address common vices in the society and also transform our mothers, fathers, youths and teens into ambassadors for Christ, as they listen to exciting, irresistible and Spirit-filled music from God’s favourite son, D-Braide.

Wisdom : D-Braide, do you think becoming more explicit about your faith and music is the right way to go?
D-Braide: Rom 1:16, “For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth:” I love Jesus because He first loved me. He brought me out of the miry clay and placed my feet on the mountain top. I’ll sing of His praise as long as I live. So, to all Christians out ther e, don’t hide your identity. Ambassadors don’t hide, they preach and they are honoured.

Wisdom: How many of your songs are based on real experiences. For example, in your song “Virtuous Lady” you did rap about wife selection, but you know you are not married?
D-Braide: 5 out of 10 of my songs are based on real experiences and I did rap about wife selection because the “Virtuous” trait in single ladies is gradually fading out. Single ladies need to go back to the basics as stated in Proverbs chapter 31 from verse 10.

Wisdom: Let’s talk about your producer. Your lead single “Virtuous Lady” has an amazing music production. Who is your producer?
D-Braide: My producer is popularly known as Dubb-D. He’s a multi-talented young man that won’t stop until he gets the best beat suitable to make any song a Hit song. Simply put, he is an extraordinary producer.

Wisdom: D-Braide when did you get into the studio on this with your producer?
D-Braide: I started recording in December 2014.
Wisdom: And you are releasing your first debut hit track on the 1st of March and later on the 25th of April, you are releasing another two tracks. Don’t you think the album is not yet fat enough to come out of the studio?
D-Braide: I know my album is fat enough and the tracks are so ready to explode in the minds of good music lovers. I’ll be releasing 2 new tracks on the 25th of April to mark my Birthday on Wednesday, 29th of April 2015.

Wisdom: Wow! Thank you for taking some time out of your busy schedule to hang out with us.
